Women’s Refugee Commission Core Values and Accountability Working Group

Overview

In 2020, I joined the Core Values and Accountability Working Group (CVAWG) at Women’s Refugee Commission, the organization that hosts the IAWG. In collaboration with colleagues across departments and levels, we work to make sure WRC embodies its core values of diversity, equality, inclusion, dignity, and forward-thinking.

Actions & Results

During the past 18 months, we have worked together on some significant actions.

  • Advocated for transparent documentation around the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and staff status, including a clearly defined process by which pay-cuts and lay-offs are determined. Made sure pay-cuts do not drop any salaries below a livable wage.

  • Advocated for an adjusted performance review period and title promotions to still take place.

  • Together with WRC’s digital media manager, I created channels on Microsoft Teams to support our fully remote workplace and provided training to staff around using the new tool.

  • Worked with leadership to gain financial support for all staff to attend the Adaway Group’s Whiteness at Work series.

  • Worked with leadership to develop a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion working group that managed a DEI audit and action plan.

  • Worked closely with leadership to develop an organization-wide staff survey about work flexibility, presented results to an all-staff meeting, and detailed recommendations for a new policy that aligns with staff needs.

  • Collected staff feedback and developed recommendations to make the parental leave policy more equitable for birthing parents and non-birthing parents.

  • Currently acting as the representative for the review and update of our staff onboarding process, identifying opportunities for belonging and inclusion.

IAWG Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Governance

  • Held working sessions with coalition members to identify opportunities and risks.

  • Developed a draft scope of work to engage a DEI expert and a governance expert to work closely together over 2021.

  • Working closely with these consultants to ensure we complete a work plan to improve DEI and governance, focusing on continually improving our communications tools.
